I was in a TubaChristmas in Chicago in 1978-79 thereabouts with over 400 people! - We tuned up in an auditorium in or near First National Bank of Chicago and it sounded like a squadron of B-29's. We performed on Daly Plaza and the whole time there was a most pathetic Salvation Army band continuing on unfazed!
HA! That's great! I told a 5th grader of mine about this (he just started TC euphonium in December) and he can't wait! He won't be able to play most of the music, but he sure wants to try!
"I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the manmade sound never equaled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig."
